Athlon X2 7750 Black Edition "KUMA"

Most of the news out of AMD lately has been out of ATI with their video cards lately and most new attention is focused on Phenom II which should be coming out very soon from AMD. But AMD is also launching a new CPU series codenamed Kuma.

AMD today announced the Athlon X2 7750 – a STARS-based processor that is a brand new dual-core processor based on the Kuma core. Since this processor is based off the Phenom core it has L3 cache, this should make it competitive in terms of both price and performance to the $82.99 Intel E5200 dual-core processor. The AMD Athlon X2 7750 is launching today with a $79 price tag.

The AMD Athlon X2 7750 is a dual-core processor with a 2.7GHz clock frequency. This is a Black Edition processor, which means that even though it comes set at 200MHz x 13.5, it has an unlocked multiplier that you can change for improved overclocking. The Athlon X2 7750 has 2 x 512MB of L2 Cache and 2MB shared of L3 Cache. The Athlon X2 7750 uses the same HyperTransport 3.0 bus that Phenom processors used. The Athlon X2 7750 has the HT set to run at 1800MHz an will work just fine in any socket AM2+ motherboard. The X2 7750 features a maximum Thermal Design Power (TDP) of 95 Watts, which means that it should be able to work in nearly any motherboard with the proper socket.

Getting To See Phenom II Before It Launches

After AMD showed off the new Phenom II processors and the Dragon platform to the media they went one step further and did a private showing to select forum members that were able to come to a scheduled showing in Boston, Chicago and San Francisco.

Legit Reviews put an alert out to forum members about the event and XstollieX jumped at the chance and made it to the Chicago event (December 9th). By going to the event he was able to get a sneak peak at Phenom II a month before it launches and will be getting one when they launch next month.

The first thing he saw were two large displays. Each one was connected to the new Dragon platform set up in the new Antec Skeleton cases. Each machine was running the Phenom II X4 940, a Gigabyte 790GX motherboard, and an ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2 graphics card. To show off what these machines could do they had the game Race Driver: Grid set up with the full Logitech driving seat, wheel and pedals. The games were set at the highest resolution and ran flawlessly. They had Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Company of Heroes, and last but not least Crysis.

Then he found table with two more computers set up on it, both were connected to 50 inch displays, and both playing Crysis. The computer on the left was AMD’s new Dragon Platform, and the computer on the right was the new Intel Core i7 @3.2GHz. Both machines were running the ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2 graphics card. The two computers side by side ran great on the highest settings.

The last area was more of a spectator event. This was the overclocking demo/contest. For this there were two teams. The first was from AMD and the second team was from Finland. The contest was done in two parts. The first part was air-cooling and the second was done using Liquid Nitrogen. Each team was randomly given Five of the Phenom II X4 940 chips cooled by a Cooler Master Z600 in a push-pull configuration. The goal of this was to achieve the highest stable overclock. Stability was tested with two loops of the Crysis CPU test. Each team worked side by side with only 30 minutes to achieve their highest stable clock. Both teams were using the Gigabyte 790GX motherboard and the 4870 X2 graphics card. The result was astonishing. Team AMD achieved a 3.94GHz clock speed and Team Finland fell just short with a 3.9GHz.

After a short break for the overclockers, the fun began. Liquid Nitrogen was used to cool the CPU. Using liquid nitrogen they were able to bring the temperature of the chip’s close to -180 degrees. Using the new AMD Dragon platform Team Finland won this round achieving a core clock of 6.0GHz. Team AMD fell just short at about 5.9GHz. After they ran the Crysis CPU for two loops they ran 3DMark05. It scored ~35,000 3dmarks when all was said and done.

OpenCL 1.0 spec released

The Khronos Group has released the first version of the OpenCL specification. The 1.0 spec has been ratified by a large number of companies, including AMD, Apple, Broadcom, Intel, Motorola, Nokia, Nvidia, and many others. Since this is a public release, developers can grab the spec itself and documentation right now through this page.

The OpenCL programming standard and associated technologies are aimed at better enabling developers to write vendor-neutral applications that can execute on either the CPU or GPU within a system. This allows developers to easily take advantage of whichever processor is best suited for the task at hand.

AMD is a founding and contributing member of the OpenCL working group in The Khronos Group, and has consistently been one of the most vocal and active proponents of the standard. AMD is committed to getting this valuable new technology into the hands of programmers as quickly as possible, and is rapidly evolving its free ATI Stream SDK to make it happen. AMD is making good progress on its OpenCL-compliant offering and plans to release a developer version of the ATI Stream SDK with support for OpenCL 1.0 for content developers in the first half of 2009. Working from early specifications of OpenCL, AMD’s engineering team has already started running code on its initial implementation.

Phenom II Overclocks Well

As we all know, the Phenom II (codename Deneb) will be AMD's second 45 nm part (the first is officially the Shanghai server part) that is scheduled to hit Q1 09. This heavily redesigned processor based on the Phenom architecture has already showed some significant per clock performance gains over the older product, and AMD considers this to be their best design ever in terms of performance, functionality, and eventual clockspeed. The first desktop products are expected to hit 3 GHz at the top end, but AMD has been hinting that the Phenom IIs can do a lot more in the hands of an enthusiast.

The first leaks were that the Phenom II could hit 4 GHz on air cooling. Yesterday AMD had some actual demonstrations at their AMD Austin Tech Day gathering, and the Phenom II was able to hit 5 GHz at 1.6v by using dry ice cooling. Dry ice is CO2, and it goes directly from solid to gas (sublimation) at a temperature of -109.3 F (-78.5C for the rest of the world) at 1 atmosphere.

The original Barcelona is a 65 nm part and really the first of its architecture. Since its release and the subsequent shuffling around of design teams, AMD has refocused their energy on delivering a design that would not only have a better per clock performance than the older part, but allow the design to scale in clockspeed on AMD's new 45 nm process. So far what we have seen shows that AMD has done very well.

With AMD's constant process improvement program, and tweaks to the Phenom II design that we typically see in the manufacturing stage, AMD could theoretically have a 3.4 to 3.6 GHz processor at moderate TDP levels (125 watts) that would more adequately perform against the Core i7 within the next 8 months.

For now, we have to sit and wait for the Phenom II to hit the market. Intel certainly needs the competition, and this product might just deliver enough of it to keep things interesting.

The die shot of the 45 nm Phenom II. 2 MB of L2 (512 KB per core) and 6 MB of L3 shared makes this an interesting part. Throw in some serious refinements to the underlying Phenom architecture, and suddenly AMD has a chip that can much more adequately compete with what Intel has out there currently (and upcoming).

Opteron 45nm Quad-Core "Shanghai" Available

AMD today announced widespread availability of its 45nm Quad-Core AMD Opteron processor, delivering up to 35 percent more performance with up to a 35 percent decrease in power consumption at idle. With IT decision-makers looking to do more with less, the newest Quad-Core AMD Opteron processor can help drive data center efficiencies and reduce complexities with innovations that offer superior virtualization performance and increased performance-per-watt. Global OEMs are expected to immediately offer enterprise and SMB customers more than 25 systems, available between launch today and the end of the year, based on the 45nm Quad-Core AMD Opteron processor, codenamed “Shanghai”

The latest Quad-Core AMD Opteron processors at the 75-watt ACP ranging from 2.3 to 2.7 GHz are available immediately, with enhanced Quad-Core AMD Opteron HE (55-watt) and SE (105-watt) processors planned to follow in Q1 2009.

“Shanghai” will be a truly global product launch for AMD. A major online and print marketing campaign in support of the launch kicks off today and launch events are happening worldwide beginning today and continuing over the next few weeks.

Anandtech has tested out AMD's "Shanghai" Opteron with a few database tests.

As you've seen, AMD is still competitive with Intel's 3.0 GHz Harpertown in the database workloads that we've shown here. We were quite surprised that Shanghai was able to meet and, in some cases, pass Harpertown at various workload levels in some of the benchmarks. Obviously, when it comes to power, AMD is still leading this space by a significant margin. FB-DIMMs obliterate any power efficiency in Intel's processors, especially when you have eight (or more in some cases) of them present in a server.

ATI Radeon HD 4850 Becomes The Most Popular Graphics Card in the U.S. Retail

The recently released market share numbers by Jon Peddie Research clearly show that ATI, graphics product group of Advanced Micro Devices, is starting to fight back market share from the arch-rival Nvidia. According to another market tracking firm, NPD, the latest products by ATI – Radeon HD 4850 and 4870 – are indeed gaining popularity in the U.S. retail market.

Even though 7 out of top 10 spots are still occupied by Nvidia GeForce graphics cards, the best selling graphics board in the U.S. retail in September was Visiontek Radeon HD 4850 512MB, reports TG Daily web-site citing NPD Group. The whole list looks as follows:

1. Visiontek 512MB GDDR3 ATI Radeon HD 4850 : 4197 (units)
2. PNY 512MB DDR2 Nvidia GeForce 8500 GT : 4106
3. PNY 512MB GDDR3 Nvidia GeForce 8800 GT : 3080
4. BFG 512MB GDDR3 Nvidia GeForce 8400 GS : 3079
5. Visiontek 512MB GDDR5 ATI Radeon HD 4870 : 3052
6. EVGA 384MB GDDR3 Nvidia GeForce 9600 GSO : 3011
7. EVGA 256MB GDDR3 Nvidia GeForce 8600 GT : 2670
8. EVGA 512MB GDDR3 Nvidia GeForce 9800 GT : 2634
9. EVGA 512MB GDDR3 Nvidia 8800 GT : 2561
10. Asustek 512MB GDDR3 ATI Radeon HD 4850 : 2509

It should be noted that the majority of advanced graphics cards are acquired from online stores due to their lower pricing. However, since retail buyers are not usually as technically savvy as those who use electronic stores, the success of rather expensive graphics cards based on ATI Radeon HD 4850 and 4870 may be an indicator that gamers begin to feel confidence in ATI’s performance-mainstream products.

Despite of financial crisis, total available market of graphics adapters increased dramatically in the third quarter of 2008. According to figures released by JPR, in Q3 2008 over 111 million graphics adapters (both standalone and integrated) were shipped. During the same quarter last year, only 91 million graphics products were shipped, and 94 million units shipped in Q2 2008, which means that shipments of graphics cores increased 22.5% year over year and 17.8% quarter-to-quarter, an unbelievable boost in general and especially noteworthy considering the current market conditions.

ATI, graphics product group of Advanced Micro Devices, was the biggest winner in Q3 2008 thanks to successful launch of ATI Radeon HD 4000-series products. The company managed to boost its shipments by 33.8% and increase its market share to 20.6%. Intel Corp. also managed to boost shipments of its chipsets with integrated graphics processors (IGPs) by 23%. Nvidia Corp. did not manage to increase its sales inline with market trends and only reported 4.4% increase in shipments during the quarter as well as market share decline to 27.8%. Also, despite of positive market conditions, Silicon Integrated Systems reported 28.9% decrease in IGP shipments in Q3, whereas Via Technologies/S3 Graphics succeeded in increasing its graphics products sales by 2.1%.

Mr. Peddie noted that Q4 2008 should be an interesting quarter as ATI and Nvidia are not expected to release any more new GPUs given the large number of introductions in the last three quarters, and Intel and AMD have stabilized on their integrated offerings.

ATI Radeon HD 4830 - Resetting the performance bar below $150

Today we see the introduction of the Radeon HD 4830 which is to be priced at or below $130. This part is poised to split the difference between the 4670 and 4850, and filling in this market segment should finish rounding out AMD's line up of RV7xx based cards for now.

This new model is, like the 4850 and 4870, based on RV770 silicon, but in its tamest form yet. On the 4830, two of the RV770's 10 SIMD units have been disabled, reducing shader power (and likely performance) somewhat. Since those SIMD units are tied to texture management units, the GPU's TMU count has dropped proportionately. The end result: the Radeon HD 4830 has a total of 128 shader execution units—or 640 stream processors, and can filter up to 32 textures per clock.

The 4830 keeps all four of the RV770's render back-ends and associated memory controllers intact, leaving it with an aggregate 256-bit memory interface. The card's GPU core runs at 575MHz, and it comes with 512MB of GDDR3 memory clocked at 900MHz (or 1800MT/s).

The Radeon 4830 is probably the least exciting of the 4800 cards being the lowest-end of the 4800 series. That said is still a very solid card and somewhat comparable to a GeForce 8800 or 9800 GT though the two seem to trade off at times. But ATI has lower power consumption and DX 10.1 support which is a bonus. This one isn't quite as clear though as others as a GeForce 9800 GT is a little cheaper than a Radeon 4830. You can pick up a GeForce 9800 GT for $100 after rebate. However, immediately at launch you can get a Radeon 4830 for $120 after rebate.

“The $100-$150 graphics card price band represents the ‘sweet spot’ of the desktop PC graphics market where the consumer gets the most graphics performance per dollar spent,” said Dean McCarron, founder and principal, Mercury Research. “This is where the latest graphics technologies reach the mainstream PC audience, and this is the level that most PC games target.”

The ATI Radeon HD 4830 graphics card delivers outstanding value to gamers. With the launch of this card, even the most intimidating games that were previously unplayable on a graphics card selling for less than $150 can now be enjoyed at playable frame rates, even when using image enhancements such as anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering. For those gamers looking to get even more performance out of their gaming rigs, ATI Radeon HD 4830 cards support ATI CrossFireX technology allowing gamers to combine as many as four cards in one PC.
