Ryzen 5 vs Core i5


Sejak awal diumumkannya Ryzen 5, jelas kelihatan AMD akan memiliki beberapa keuntungan besar dibandingkan musuh bebuyutannya. Dengan kisaran harga $ 250, model tertinggi yaitu Ryzen 5 1600X menawarkan 6 Core dan 12 Thread, sementara dengan pesaing terdekatnya yang memiliki harga yang hampir sama, yaitu Core i5 7600K, anda hanya mendapatkan 4 Core dan tidak ada Thread tambahan. Walaupun Intel Core i5 berbasis Kaby Lake tersebut memiliki clock speed yang lebih tinggi, namun dipastikan sulit unjuk gigi di hadapan Ryzen 5 1600X dalam aplikasi yang memanfaatkan banyak thread.

Beberapa hasil benchmark sebagai berikut :

Cinebench yang merupakan aplikasi rendering populer dari Maxon, memperlihatkan keunggulan mutlak Ryzen 5 hingga mencapai 80% di atas Core i5 Kaby Lake.

Blender (aplikasi rendering open-source yang banyak digunakan untuk menghasilkan film 3D) juga menyukai jumlah core/thread yang lebih banyak. Terbukti hasil benchmark di atas di mana Ryzen 5 lebih cepat 50% dibandingkan pesaingnya.

7-Zip merupakan aplikasi kompresi file gratis yang punya fitur benchmark untuk mengukur kecepatan komputer dalam meng-kompres dan de-kompres file. Dalam aplikasi ini jelas keunggulan Ryzen 5 tidak terbantahkan.

3DMark merupakan software legendaris untuk benchmark namun lebih menitikberatkan pada GPU dibanding CPU. Dalam 3DMark ini, Ryzen 5 masih unggul sedikit berkat jumlah core/thread nya yang lebih banyak.

Beralih ke game, Ashes of the Singularity : Escalation yang telah merilis patch untuk Ryzen 5, membuktikan anomali kinerja Ryzen pada sebagian game dapat diatasi dengan beberapa perbaikan dari developer game itu sendiri.

Asus launches ZenFone series for Indonesia

ZenFone is a series of Intel-powered Android smartphones that comes in three screen sizes with different features. The 4-inch model sports swappable back covers and has a microSD card slot, while the 5-inch model has a HD display (1.280x720-pixels). The highest-end ZenFone 6 will come with a 13-megapixel camera, as well as the Asus SonicMaster audio technology.

All ZenFone handsets will have the Asus ZenFone UI skin on top of the Android OS as well as PixelMaster, a camera enhancement that adds features such as depth-of-field effects. On the ZenFone 5 and 6, Asus has also added a low-light mode that the company claims to "significantly increase" camera performance in low-light conditions.

In Indonesia, the ZenFone 4 will go for 1,099,000 Indonesian rupiah ($95), while the ZenFone 5 will sell for 2,099,000 Indonesian rupiah ($182) while the ZenFone 6 is the most expensive at 3,099,000 Indonesian rupiah ($269).

ASUS to launch the second Jay Chou edition laptop N45J...

Unlike the first model with a piano black finish, the new laptop N45J will be white with similar artistic designs printed at the back of the display. The new design is said to be related to Jay's upcoming album. AMD to Fight i7 Sandy Bridge with Bulldozer

Advanced Micro Devices at present is not able to compete in terms of pure performance against Intel Corp.’s Core i7-series “Sandy Bridge” microprocessors, according to benchmark results, but with its next-generation Bulldozer-based chips the company fully aims to fight.


A leaked document from AMD seen by us here claims that AMD FX-series central processing unit (CPUs) powered by the Bulldozer micro-architecture will be fully able to rival Core i7 2600-series chips. Below is the art-work for FX processor box:


AMD plans to introduce AMD 900-series chipsets compatible with Zambezi processors in Q2 2011. The Bulldozer processors, Radeon HD 6000 "Northern Islands" discrete graphics cards and AMD 900-series core-logic sets will power AMD's next-generation enthusiast-class platform code-named Scorpius.

The initial family of AMD's FX-series microprocessors based on Bulldozer micro-architecture will include four models with eight, six or four cores and 95W or 125W thermal design power (TDP).

The first breed of AMD FX8000, FX6000 and FX4000 currently known under Zambezi code-name will completely support all the advantages that the Bulldozer micro-architecture is supposed to bring, including new Flex FP floating point processing unit. The new chips in maximum eight-core configurations are projected - by AMD's internal documents - to offer roughly 50% performance improvement over Phenom II-series microprocessors in multimedia applications.


The primary family of AMD FX-series central processing units (CPUs) will feature two eight-core models, one six-core flavour as well as a quad-core version. The chips will support dual-channel DDR3 1866MHz memory, will support Turbo Core dynamic acceleration technology and will come in AM3+ form-factor and will have 125W and 95W TDP. The second "wave" of Bulldozer chips will also include four microprocessors and will improve performance of the initial breed of CPUs.

Intel Selling Upgrade Card to Unlock

Intel is asking customers to pay extra if they want the full power of their store-bought silicon. An eagle-eyed Engadget reader was surfing the Best Buy shelves when he noticed this $50 card --


and sure enough, Intel websites confirm -- that lets you download software to unlock extra threads and cache on the new Pentium G6951 processor. The chip actually have a full 1MB of L3 cache that's enabled plus HyperThreading support.

This 'new' idea is similar to online games idea that let you "BUY" extra weapons and features with voucher cards. Still, it's an intriguing business model, and before you unleash your rage in comments, you should know that Intel's just testing it out on this low-end processor in a few select markets for now (United States, Canada, the Netherlands, and Spain).

In fact, this is the very first time in history, when a hardware maker enables a software upgrade. Interestingly, how much time will it take hackers to enable the application to all owners of Pentium-based systems? Or maybe that was indeed the plan to slowdown sales of CPUs by Advanced Micro Devices?

AMD reduces CPU prices to keep market share

AMD recently reduced prices for about 20 of its desktop processors. According to sources from motherboard players, the price cuts are aimed at defending against competition from Intel.

AMD's quad-core Athlon II X4 640 CPU has seen its price drop from US$122 to US$99, while the dual-core Phenom II X2 555 Black Edition CPU dropped from US$105 to US$93, and the quad-core Phenom II X4 955 and 965 Black Edition both dropped US$26. Most of the company's other processors have seen drops up to US$10.

The above prices only apply to "direct" AMD customers buying CPUs in trays of 1000, but the savings should start trickling down to street prices. So stay tuned!

AMD and Intel Announce Settlement of All Disputes

SUNNYVALE/SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Nov. 12, 2009 – Intel Corporation and Advanced Micro Devices today announced a comprehensive agreement to end all outstanding legal disputes between the companies, including antitrust litigation and patent cross license disputes.

Under terms of the agreement, AMD and Intel obtain patent rights from a new 5-year cross license agreement, Intel and AMD will give up any claims of breach from the previous license agreement, and Intel will pay AMD $1.25 billion. Intel has also agreed to abide by a set of business practice provisions. As a result, AMD will drop all pending litigation including the case in U.S. District Court in Delaware and two cases pending in Japan. AMD will also withdraw all of its regulatory complaints worldwide. The agreement will be made public in filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

AMD CEO Dirk Meyer said there are three key components to the agreement:

* First, Intel has agreed to an important set of ground rules that we hope will define the path to a free and open market in the microprocessor industry;

* Second, we have agreed to a new patent cross-license agreement that gives AMD broad rights and the freedom to operate a business utilizing multiple foundries,

* And third, GLOBALFOUNDRIES has agreed to terms that allow them the freedom to operate as an independent world-class leading-edge foundry company, going forward, without being a subsidiary of AMD.

AMD said in a conference call this morning that this agreement gives ATIC, the co-owner of GlobalFoundries, much more flexibility and could allow it to merge GlobalFoundries and Chartered Semiconductor, which ATIC acquired in September. This deal also allows AMD to produce all of its processors in third-party fabs, freeing it from the restriction of having to be GlobalFoundries' parent company.

The two companies commented in a joint statement about today's agreement, "While the relationship between the two companies has been difficult in the past, this agreement ends the legal disputes and enables the companies to focus all of our efforts on product innovation and development."

nVidia poke fun at Intel with cartoons

nVidia has put up a website with a handful of professionally drawn cartoons meant to poke fun at Intel.

The site, entitled "Intel's Insides," bears an nVidia logo at the bottom right as well as the mention, "This website is not provided, sponsored or endorsed by Intel Corporation." A whois lookup shows the "intelsinsides.com" domain is tied to an address in Portugal, but it uses the same DNS servers as nVidia's website.

Intel's cheat on 3DMark Vantage scores

Futuremark's popular 3DMark benchmark has been the target of several questionable optimizations over the years. Given that history, it's not surprising that the company has strict guidelines for the graphics drivers it approves for use with 3DMark Vantage. These guidelines, which can be viewed here (PDF), explicitly forbid optimizations that specifically target the 3DMark Vantage executable. Here's an excerpt:

With the exception of configuring the correct rendering mode on multi-GPU systems, it is prohibited for the driver to detect the launch of 3DMark Vantage executable and to alter, replace or override any quality parameters or parts of the benchmark workload based on the detection. Optimizations in the driver that utilize empirical data of 3DMark Vantage workloads are prohibited.

In this case, Intel is not playing fair. Recently, AMD has notified Futuremark that Intel's 15.15.4.1872 Graphics Media Accelerator drivers for Windows 7 incorporate performance optimizations that specifically target the benchmark.

Tech Report decided to investigate. They tested 3DMark Vantage 1.0.1 with these drivers on a G41 Express-based Gigabyte GA-G41M-ES2H motherboard running the Windows 7 x64 release-to-manufacturing build, a Core 2 Duo E6300, 4GB of DDR2-800 memory, and a Raptor WD1500ADFD hard drive. They first ran the benchmark normally. Then, they renamed the 3DMark executable from "3DMarkVantage.exe" to "3DMarkVintage.exe". And—SURPRISE!—there was a substantial performance difference between the two.


System's overall score climbs by 37% when the graphics driver knows it's running Vantage. Meanwhile, the GPU score jumps 46% thanks to Intel's apparent Vantage optimization. At the same time, the CPU score falls by nearly 10%.


In the GPU tests, the system's CPU utilization is much higher with the default executable than with the "3DMarkVintage" executable. Intel appears to be offloading some of the work associated with the GPU tests onto the CPU in order to improve 3DMark scores.

Intel is definitely detecting 3DMark Vantage and changing the behavior of its drivers in order to improve performance, which would appear to be a direct contravention of Futuremark's guidelines. Intel's 15.15.4.1872 graphics drivers don't appear on Futuremark's approved driver list for 3DMark Vantage. Indeed, NONE of the company's Windows 7 drivers do so far.

Violating Futuremark's driver optimization guidelines is one thing, but Intel also claims it's offloading vertex processing to enhance performance in games. Indeed, the very same INF file that singles out 3DMarkVantage.exe also names other executables.

One of the games on the list for detection, Crysis Warhead. Tech Report also tested it with the executable under its original name and then renamed to Crisis.exe, using FRAPS to collect real-world frame rate data with the game running at 800x600 and minimum detail levels.


Intel's software-based vertex processing scheme improves in-game frame rates by nearly 50% when Crysis.exe is detected, at least in the first level of the game we used for testing. However, even 15 FPS is a long way from what we'd consider a playable frame rate. The game doesn't exactly look like Crysis Warhead when running at such low detail levels, either.

Intel and AMD in licensing dispute

Intel has formally accused AMD of breaching the two companies' 2001 cross-licensing agreement.

Here's why Intel thinks AMD is breaching the agreement:

Intel believes that Global Foundries is not a subsidiary under terms of the agreement and is therefore not licensed under the 2001 patent cross-license agreement. Intel also said the structure of the deal between AMD and ATIC breaches a confidential portion of that agreement. Intel has asked AMD to make the relevant portion of the agreement public, but so far AMD has declined to do so.

AMD responded with the following statement:

Intel's action is an attempt to distract the world from the global antitrust scrutiny it faces. Should this matter proceed to litigation, we will prove not only that Intel is wrong, but also that Intel fabricated this claim to interfere with our commercial relationships and thus has violated the cross-license.

Our Asset Smart transaction and the creation of a game-changing company, GLOBALFOUNDRIES, pose a threat to Intel’s business model and illegal dominance in the x86 market, as does our mix of intellectual property and our technology roadmap. And as the spotlight is cast ever more harshly on Intel’s anticompetitive practices by regulators around the globe, Intel is attempting to do whatever it can to limit competition, stifle customer choice and constrain AMD’s market share.

According to AMD's form 8-K filing, Intel isn't kidding about taking away AMD's license—it "purports to terminate [AMD]'s rights and licenses under the Cross License in 60 days if the alleged breach has not been corrected."

Some background: The Patent Cross License Agreement benefits both companies by granting each company license to the others’ patents. This is not a technology license. To put it simply, the pace of innovation is fast and furious in our market, and the agreement’s purpose is to ensure that each company can innovate freely in its product designs, without threat of patent infringement litigation over our respective innovations. To be clear, Intel leverages innovative AMD patents critical for its product designs under the cross license. This includes AMD patents related to 64-bit architecture extensions, integrated memory controller, multi-core architecture, etc. The cross-license is very much a two-way street.

Intel currently uses AMD's x86-64 technology in all shipping Pentium and Core processors, while AMD, naturally, uses Intel's x86 tech in all of its PC processors.

Core i7 'Nehalem' also have TLB issue

If you open Intel’s official document that is stored here, on page 37 AAJ1 Clarification of TRANSLATION LOOKASIDE BUFFERS (TLBS) Invalidation part, you will see that Intel says that in some rare cases improper TLB invalidation may result in unpredictable system behavior and can hang your OS or result with incorrect data.

Here is the word to word quote: "In rare instances, improper TLB invalidation may result in unpredictable system behavior, such as system hangs or incorrect data. Developers of operating systems should take this documentation into account when designing TLB invalidation algorithms. For the processors affected, Intel has provided a recommended update to system and BIOS vendors to incorporate into their BIOS to resolve this issue."

European Commission confirms supplementary Statement of Objections sent to Intel

The European Commission can confirm that it has sent a supplementary Statement of Objections (SSO) to Intel on 17th July. Refer to MEMO/08/517

In the SSO, the European Commission accuses Intel of three more elements of abusive conduct in order to monopolize the EU market of central processing units (CPUs):
  • First, Intel has provided substantial rebates to a leading European personal computer (PC) retailer conditional on it selling only Intel-based PCs.
  • Secondly, Intel made payments in order to induce a leading Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) to delay the planned launch of a product line incorporating an AMD-based CPU.
  • Thirdly, in a subsequent period, Intel has provided substantial rebates to that same OEM conditional on it obtaining all of its laptop CPU requirements from Intel.

The SSO reinforces the Commission’s preliminary view outlined in a Statement of Objections of 26 July 2007 (see MEMO/07/314) that Intel has infringed EC Treaty rules on abuse of a dominant position (Article 82) with the aim of excluding its main rival, AMD, from the x86 Central Processing Units (CPU) market.

South Korea fines Intel $25 million

The South Korea Fair Trade Commission has brought the hammer down on Intel, fining the company 26 billion won ($25.4 million) for alleged anti-competitive behavior. Intel faced the same charge there as in several other nations and the European Union: bribing companies to keep AMD processors out of their product lines.

According to the Korean regulators, Intel provided rebates to Samsung and other South Korean computer makers in exchange for not using AMD processors. Along with the hefty fine, the Fair Trade Commission is ordering Intel to stop using rebates pushing PC makers to shun AMD's products.

Still claiming innocence, Intel went on to say it intends to "consider its options, including a possible appeal."

Trend for bashing AMD

A few years ago it was fashionable to bash Intel's Pentium 4 as a braindead architecture. It is now trendy to bash AMD. One" PC doctor" at ZDNet goes as far to say that:

"When I look at AMD’s current product line, all I see is a forest of deadness. Intel has products trump every category of products going. Server, desktop, mobile, low-end, high-end, dual-core, quad-core. Intel has all these markets stitched up."

Like any design, the K10 is a trade-off. And most trade-offs were made in favor of the applications in the server and HPC market, at the expense of games and other desktop applications.



A 2 GHz Barcelona is capable of keeping up with the best 65 nm Xeons in those applications.

It is pretty clear why AMD focused on the server market. Without a complete redesign it is not possible to beat Intel's integer crunching power and the fast and big L2-cache and that is exactly what a modern game needs. Barcelona built further on the K8 architecture and inherited the relatively inflexible integer pipeline. While Core 2 has sophisticated reordering of loads and stores, Barcelona does a limited reordering of loads. While Core 2 offers a 32 entry queue to the integer units, Barcelona has 3 rather inflexible separated 8 entry queues.

So the right way forward for AMD was to focus on HPC and server applications where it could leverage it's strong points. We can bash AMD for being so late, and coming up with relatively low clocked CPUs, but even a 2.8 GHz Phenom would not have raise AMD's ASP significantly in the desktop market.

Projecting the bad performance of the desktop chip to say that "AMD's products are a dead forest" is ... just silly. AMD is very competitive in the HPC / Server market.

New Economic Study Finds Intel Extracted Monopoly Profits of $60 Billion Since 1996

A new economic study issued by Dr. Michael A. Williams, Director, ERS Group, found that Intel has extracted monopoly profits from microprocessor sales of more than $60 billion in the period 1996-2006. Dr. Williams' analysis explains why pro-competitive justifications for Intel's monopoly profits are implausible.

Williams also found that consumers and computer manufacturers could gain over $80 billion over the next decade if the microprocessor market were open to competition. The analysis noted that consumers would save at least $61 billion over the period, with computer manufacturers projected to save another $20 billion, enabling them to increase their investment in R&D create improved products and greater product variety; and provide additional innovation benefits to computer buyers around the world.

On July 27, 2007, The European Commission has issued a statement of objections to Intel regarding its alleged anti-competitive practices in the European Union. As the Commission states, the statement "outlines the Commission's preliminary view that Intel has infringed the EC Treaty rules on abuse of a dominant position (Article 82) with the aim of excluding its main rival, AMD, from the x86 Computer Processing Units (CPU) market."

In the [statement of objections], the Commission outlines its preliminary conclusion that Intel has engaged in three types of abuse of a dominant market position. First, Intel has provided substantial rebates to various Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) conditional on them obtaining all or the great majority of their CPU requirements from Intel. Secondly, in a number of instances, Intel made payments in order to induce an OEM to either delay or cancel the launch of a product line incorporating an AMD-based CPU. Thirdly, in the context of bids against AMD-based products for strategic customers in the server segment of the market, Intel has offered CPUs on average below cost.
